Jordan Shops for Homeless Children

Jordan during his shopping spree Levi Blackman

“ Each child thanks him for his generosity. ”

Jordan wanted to shop, but not for himself. He wanted to purchase toys and clothes to give to the homeless children in his community in California.

News spread of this 12-year-old boy – dealing with the life-threatening challenges of his brain tumor – wished to help others.

With help from Make-A-Wish® Greater Bay Area, Jordan’s wish was coming together. Two local organizations compiled a shopping list to identify items most important to homeless children, and retailers and shoppers chip in by making purchases ahead of time.

With excitement in the air, it’s time for Jordan’s shopping spree.

His first stop – Wal-Mart. Every manager, associate and clerk stands outside to greet him with smiles and tears of joy. Since the big-hearted boy had previously been featured in a newspaper story, many of the shoppers recognize him. They offer Jordan words of encouragement and more. Some even give him money to add to his shopping spree allowance, while others buy items right off the gift registry.

As he continues from store to store, he finds carts and bins filled with merchandise already purchased by shoppers and store employees to support his wish. Every store gives him a discount, a check to supplement his spree and a special gift just for him.

With the shopping done, Jordan wants to meet the kids benefiting from everyone’s kindness. So Make-A-Wish volunteers throw a celebration at a ranch in Napa for Jordan’s friends and family, and the families of the homeless children.

This wish kid arrives at the party aboard a fire truck with its sirens blaring. And all the kids greet him with hand-made banners, cheers, applause, and thank-you cards.  Then everyone feasts on Domino’s pizza, donated cookies and Cold Stone Creamery ice cream. The 150 guests enjoy the sing-along music, animals, a clown and face painting.

In addition to the gratitude of the children, Jordan earns the admiration of the Mayor of Napa. The mayor announces how proud he is of Jordan and presents him with a key to the city. In another highlight, Jordan cries with happiness as he tears open the gift wrapping on his new video camera.

At the end of the day, Jordan gives each kid a hug and a specially-selected present, wrapped that morning by his family and Make-A-Wish volunteers. Each child thanks him for his generosity and compassion.

At 27 years old, you have made cry from your outpouring of love and generosity, right here at work at my desk! Good hearts, kindness, and selfless acts of kindness is way more than anyone can ever ask for, especially from a very special young man such as yourself. May God Bless you and anything or anyone that you touch, and I Pray that others follow your lead. Good luck!

This was truly a remarkable story. Amazing! Jordan you're an angel sent from God. You made a wish that benefited the children around you, and not yourself, and that alone is wonderful. You have a big heart, and that will take you a long way. You care about other people, and you want to help in every way you can. You are a hero, and don't let anyone tell you any different. When I read your story, it made my day, for I have never seen a child more selfless than you. My eyes are filled with tears of joy, because I know that God will indeed bless you for your good deeds. There will come a day, when you will be rewarded for all your hard work and dedication. Keep up the good work, and good luck in the future! God bless!

I am 11 yrs. old. My sister is 17. She is a wish kid too but hasn't chosen her wish yet. Your's is the best one I've ever read! I wish everybody's wish was as nice as yours! It made my mom cry to read about your day. I hope you are better now. You are a nice boy. Bye!

I need to tell you that you are an amazing young man. Your parents have done an amazing job raising you to be such a fine, caring and selfless person. Cheers to you and I wish you luck in everything you pursue. I wish there were more young people like you out there in our world. God bless you.

You truly are an angel. Flowers leave some of their fragrance on the hands that bestows them, and I couldn't agree more. Life is painful, as things we all must battle such as cancer or misfortune striking down. I had skin cancer as a little girl, and I can only imagine your own battle. Out of all the things you could've wished for, you gave back to those in need. You deserved that key to the city and so much more. Jordan, we're all behind you to the max. I am only fifteen, but I have made up my mind to join Make-A-Wish as a volunteer thanks to you. I know so many people are saying this (and who can blame them?) But, if you are reading this, You're in the Make-A-Wish hall of fame-the national-THE WORLD hall of fame. God bless you, your family, and those who love you....and, trust me, kiddo, that's A LOT!
