Allan presents his car design to GM

Allan in a race car

“ ...this is everything I have dreamed of. ”

- Allan

Allan has been designing sports cars since he was four – starting with crayons and paper. Now – teenager dealing with leukemia - he hopes to become a professional car designer in Motor City.

Thanks to UAW-GM and Make-A-Wish® Philadelphia and Susquehanna Valley, Allan’s wish comes true.

The Design Team at GM Tech Center invites Allan to present some of his best designs at their headquarters near Detroit.

“I was very impressed with Allan as well as his designs,” says Ed Welburn, Global Design vice president. “I was most impressed with his determination, creativity and visionary thinking. We hope his visit to GM Design Center inspires him further to fulfill his destiny.”

Allan is a huge fan of GM’s Chevrolet Corvette and Pontiac Trans Am sports cars with big ideas for “next generation” designs. These iconic cars influenced Allan’s sleek, low-slung lines of his favorite design - a racy flame-red speedster that seems to hover just above ground. Allan revs up his design with a 600-horsepower motor.  Its huge rear tires speak of roots in the muscle cars of the Motor City.

When the creative team unveils the sketches of Allan’s design kicked into high gear, this wish kid could barely respond.

“Wow! Oh boy! Man! Man, this is…that is-whoa man!” he says.

The Design Team, impressed by Allan and his designs, offer him advice on college, the industry and their internship program.

“You’ve got everything it takes,” says Brian Baker, DRIVE Team manager.

An impressed Baker gives Allan an insider’s tour of the Tech Center campus. Here, Allan sits in many specialized cars from the executive garage. He sits behind the wheel of NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon’s #24 DuPont Chevy Monte Carlo race car. He takes a ride in a Pontiac Trans Am – specifically modified for the 2004 Woodward Dream Cruise – with Concept Vehicle Coordinator Mike Erdodi. Then Vice President Welburn becomes Allan’s personal chauffeur and the pair speeds around the GM grounds in the newest, hottest cars the company has to offer – even cruising back in time to take in the classic cars at the GM Heritage Center.

Allan now has a host of new friends at GM to open doors for him in the future.

“All I have to say is thank God that I’m here to tell you where I came from – a lot of agony and pain. But this is everything I have dreamed of, that got me through,” Allan says. “I thank the Lord for giving me another day to live my dreams. And I thank each of you for your generosity.”

It sounds as though Allan had a wonderful time at GM in Detroit. I must say, as a fellow lover of the Chevy Corvette, I was thoroughly impressed with his car design. I would certainly buy one.
