However, unlike most teens, Jaylah faced a difficult struggle. The high school honors student from San Antonio, Texas, battled a rare form of cancer. Prior to her diagnosis, Jaylah was an active teen who enjoyed juggling many extracurricular activities, including volunteer work with the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center. Sadly, because of her health issues, she was forced to discontinue them.
Painting remained Jaylah's true passion and served as a creative outlet that helped her navigate this trying time – which made the surprise that was in store for her more heartwarming.
Thanks to Subaru of America Inc., Make-A-Wish® hosted a special wish unveiling for Jaylah at North Park Subaru Dominion, which set aside part of their showroom for a community celebration featuring an exhibit of Jaylah's paintings during the annual Subaru Share The Love® Event. At the showing, it was also revealed that Jaylah and her family would be heading to California so Jaylah could showcase her artwork in an exhibit at Shoebox Projects, an experimental art space in LA.
On cloud nine, Jaylah greeted and hugged friends, family and local art enthusiasts as she described the themes and inspiration behind her colorful works such as Father's Light, which showcased her father’s hands holding a candle. Wearing bold silver earrings and flashing a brilliant smile, Jaylah was positively beaming given the realization that her wish was coming true.
"I came into art because it was another way to inspire others, and a way for me to be able to get my emotions out," said Jaylah, looking every bit the part of an up-and-coming artist.
Jaylah’s art show proved how wishes have the power to transform lives by providing hope and the ability to experience life beyond illness. It also doubled as an opportunity to bring the community together to make a difference. The Subaru exhibit was held in conjunction with the Pack the Outback Toy Drive, which encouraged attendees to bring new, unwrapped toys so wishes could be fulfilled to more kids in Jaylah's community who were facing critical illnesses.
Thank you, Subaru, for helping to bring Jaylah’s wish to life and for helping introduce others to her talent and generous heart.
