Is Wish Granting a Huge Time Commitment? Short Answer: No

Morgan Kemp, second from left, became a wish granter in college.
Being in college teaches you a lot about time management and accomplishing the things you want to do. While I was busy with class, meetings, building friendships and improving my resume, I found joy in staying true to my values, and that was volunteering with Make-A-Wish® and transforming the lives of families in my community.

I decided to become a wish granter with Make-A-Wish Arizona in the summer of 2017. I was unsure of the time commitment that it was going to require or the number of wishes I had to complete, but I knew that I loved the organization’s mission: To grant life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. I was determined to make it work with the busy schedule college demanded of me. After attending the volunteer orientation for a few hours one Saturday, I quickly learned that the time commitment of being a wish granter was considerably less than I expected. I was amazed to find out that this volunteer opportunity was on my own time, too.

I quickly signed up for a wish down in Tucson where I was going to school, and the process began. Throughout the entire process of planning the wish and meeting with the wish family, I had only committed a total of five hours of my time – and the amount of time that it took compared to the impact it made on a child with a critical illness was incomparable.

Being a wish granter can make such a huge impact on your life and a child’s life. The small amount of time that you give to help a child determine his or her most heartfelt wish does not even compare to the lifelong memories that are created when that child’s wish comes true. What’s more, as a wish granter you can meet other caring people in your community who stop at nothing to bring hope, strength and joy to children when they need it most.

If you are interested in becoming a wish granter, take a look at your chapter’s website to find more information on orientation sessions.

Like dollars, every little bit of time you can give helps Make-A-Wish get closer to achieving its vision of granting the wish of every eligible child.
