Meet the Wish Kid Behind the Song in Our New PSA

For wish kid Kara Kuper, music provided therapy amidst an uncertain and scary time of battling leukemia. Writing her own songs and playing them on her ukulele was something that helped her cope with her illness.

When she first learned that her wish to record her music in a studio would be granted, it was more than she could have imagined. The time finally arrived for Kara to travel to Los Angeles to have her wish come true, and she said she couldn’t believe what was unfolding for her.

“My Make-A-Wish trip was the best four days of my life. It gave me hope, something to look forward to and something to fight for,” Kara, 18, said. “I am happy I was able to share my story through music and share what I believe can help others going through hard times.”

Kara teamed up with Wish I Was (aka Tyson Illingworth) on the beautiful and inspiring “Ready to Start” featured in our new “Where there’s a wish, there’s a way” PSA.

“I loved writing a song for a purpose,” Kara said. “I usually write songs just about me or my experiences but being able to write a song for a cause made me feel good and gave me more of a reason to make it mean something to others. Also, being able to connect others into the song, to make them part of the message was really cool. I loved working on that song a lot.”

Kara added, “I am happy I was able to share my story through music and share what I believe can help others going through hard times. Make-A-Wish gave me the opportunity to do that for an amazing cause that can help others all around the world who might be going through the same thing as me.”

Kara’s wish was granted by Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.
